Dirty Harry Movie Stills and pre-2008-fire comparisons
Although much of the film was shot on location around San Francisco, the bank robbery sequence was shot on New York Street at Universal.
The burger cafe where Harry tries to eat a hot dog was a practical set on the corner of New York Street next to where the King Kong attraction was sited.
Until the 2008 fire, the key buildings looked the same as they did in 1971. Various changes were made over time. Some changes were also made in 1985 when the King Kong 'soundstage' was constructed. The original sets used in Dirty Harry were destroyed by fire in 1990, and were rebuilt afterwards to similar designs (and then finally destroyed in 2008, before New York Street was redesigned).
The theater marquee (seen in the still showing Harry Callahan going into the burger cafe) shows Play Misty For Me, which of course was directed by Clint Eastwood and was released in the same year as Dirty Harry.
The top photo shown below is a panoramic view of the east end of New York Street, showing the bank building featured in Dirty Harry and taken in 2007, before the area was destroyed in the June 2008 fire.
