Studio(s): Culver Studios - Universal Studios Hollywood
NBC/Touchstone's Emmy-award winning comedy featuring the surreal, hilarious and moving story of the staff and patients of the Sacred Heart Hospital, through the eyes of "newbie" John "J.D." Dorian (Zach Braff).
As Scrubs is a single-camera sitcom, a great deal of authenticity is gained by the hospital scenes being filmed at the former North Hollywood Medical Center in Sherman Oaks, just over 4 miles from Universal City. The hospital closed in 1998, and was unoccupied until Scrubs moved in in 2001.
The first, second and fourth floors of the Center are used to shoot the hospital scenes (and J.D. and Chris Turk's (Donald Faison) apartments), whilst the third floor houses dressing rooms, wardrobe and make-up departments. Part of the first floor is also set aside for office space for the writers, editors and casting directors.
The basement of the Center houses the penthouse apartment belonging to Dr. Perry Cox (John C. McGinley)
However, episodes regularly call for special one-off sets to be built to accommodate the writer's flights of imagination, and these were shot at Universal Studios Hollywood prior to Season Nine.
Season Nine (the final season) was shot at Culver Studios to accommodate the additional sets of Winston University.
