New Summer Attractions: Studio Goes Behind The Scenes To Show The Rollicking Movie Magic of “Casper” and Stellar Special Effects of Apollo 13
On May 26, Universal Studios will conjure up “Casper — Behind the Screams”, a haunted house party that reveals the wonders of CGI (Computer Generated Imaging), the breakthrough technology that brings to “life” the specters of Amblin Entertainment’s “Casper.” The attraction will open simultaneously with the comic fantasy film and run through September 4 (Labor Day).
The studio’s world famous designers have resurrected a replica of “Whipstaff Manor,” the creepy old mansion in habited by Casper and Ghosty Trio of Stretch, Stinke and Fatso, on Universal Streets of the World.
In the film, Christina Ricci as Kat Harvey and Bill Pulman as her father, Dr, Harvey, who claims to be a “ghost therapist,” are brought to Whipstaff Manor by unscrupuious heiress (Cathy Moriarty) to rid the house of apparitions. But the spirts aren’t willing to vacate the premises. While Kat befriends the lonely Casper, the Ghostly Trio exorcises its rites to dispossess the living.
The “Casper — Behind The Screams” attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood has its own share of other-worldly mischief. wandering through cobwebbed corridors to Whipstaff Manor’s eere attic, visitors come face-to face with the film’s fleeting, floating phantoms. The Grand Hall offers a revealing glimpse into the secrets of CGI technology, the wizardry which created the awesome creatures in the blockbuster hit, “Jurrasic Park” and has since been advanced to create the spirits of “Casper” and join them seamlessly with live actors.
“This is the first,” says Jim Timon, vice president of entertainment for Universal Studios Hollywood. “Moviegoers are aware of the incredible images CGI has made possible. But now they’ll see how the magic works.”
Also included are precise replicas of the movie’s spooky sets, artwork, supernatural illusions and such one-of-a-kind props as the world’s only haunted vacuum cleaner — a kind of “ghost duster” — which Casper employs to spread a coat of grime across the creaky floors of Whipstaff Manor.
